During the Christeros War in Mexico the Catholic church was closed. Some priests like Father Ramon Cantillo ignored the government church shut down and went underground. As Elena Balmares attended an early morning secret Mass, Father Ramon, an old childhood friend, was assaulted by the police. He gave Elena his rosary after he fell to the ground. Later he was murdered by government agents and his rosary passed down through her family to Loretto, a troubled young girl living in Salado, Texas. Loretto has a relationship with her boyfriend and later fears pregnancy. Her mother reaches out for help to Dr. MacArthur Donne, her doctor living in Austin, Texas. Loretto plays Ophelia in a play about Hamlet in her local school and through her worries becomes obsessed with drowning, like Ophelia did. Mac and Jack and Duchess, the dog, go to Salado.
